Supporting Your Inner Vitality

Understanding Visceral Care

Tailored osteopathic care for every chapter of your health journey

Why “Inner Movement” Matters

At the heart of Osteopathy is the understanding that the body is a unified whole. True mobility goes deeper than just muscles; it includes the vital movement of your internal organs and the fascia that supports them.

Internal restrictions, perhaps due to previous surgery, inflammation or postural stress, act like a snag in a sweater. The body is forced to compensate, compromising alignment and leading to aches in distant areas—like a stiff lower back that feels ‘untraceable’ to a specific injury.

French Osteopath Jean-Pierre Barral, the pioneer of Visceral Manipulation, famously noted that “movement is life.” For your body to function optimally, your organs must be able to slide and glide as you breathe and move.

How we support your health

By using gentle, specifically placed manual forces, we aim to improve the mobility and tone of the internal organs. This approach may assist you in managing:

  • Digestive Ease: Supporting the body through bloating, reflux, or constipation by easing tension around the stomach and intestines.
  • Respiratory Mechanics: Supporting the breathing mechanics of those with Asthma, COPD, or a lingering cough by improving the mobility of the ribcage and diaphragm
  • Pelvic & Lower Back Health: Releasing tension around the bladder or uterus to assist with the management of period pain and pelvic tension.
  • Post-Surgical Recovery: Helping to restore tissue glide after abdominal or pelvic surgeries (such as C-sections or laparoscopies) once the initial healing phase is complete.
  • Chronic Pain: Addressing the “fascial drag” and internal tensions which may be the hidden contributor to persistent neck or back pain.

“The purpose of the practitioner is to find the health within the patient.”Jean-Pierre Barral

What to Expect

Visceral Manipulation is not about “deep pressure.” It involves a subtle, rhythmic approach that follows your body’s internal cues. It aims to help your body release tension patterns, and is always integrated with our standard Osteopathic care.

A Collaborative & Safe Approach

While Visceral Manipulation is a powerful tool for improving the mechanical movement of your body, we recognise that health is multi-faceted.

We often work with Naturopaths or Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners. While they address the physiological aspects of your health (like diet and supplementation), we focus on the physical mobility of the structures involved.

Your safety is our priority. Visceral Osteopathy supports function but is not a substitute for medical diagnosis. If we suspect your symptoms require medical investigation—such as acute infection or undiagnosed pathology—we will refer you to your GP or a specialist for a comprehensive assessment.
